Sevilla vs Celta Vigo prediction

La Liga rivals take a break from domestic action to take part in the much anticipated Copa del Rey semi-final duel at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Thursday night. Two rivals have been in somewhat contrasting forms over the past couple of weeks, but we should be in for an exciting clash.

Going strong and going hard

Following a poor stretch at the beginning of the season, Sevilla have finally managed to grab some ground under their feet and are going on an impressive run. Only one draw and one loss in their last ten games in all competitions have seen Unai Emery’s men move up to fifth place in the standings and on verge of Champions League football. Rojiblancos are still eight points adrift of Villarreal in fourth spot, but will not surrender in their pursuit. Sevilla have managed a comprehensive 3-1 win at the weekend over Levante with Gameiro, Iborra and Konoplyanka getting on the scoresheet for the hosts, while the visitors managed one through their latest addition to the squad Giuseppe Rossi. Emery’s men have conceded only one goal in their last five matched and the return of defender Federico Fazio from Tottenham will only improve their backline. Plenty of action on the January deadline day as Sevilla were going strong in their pursuit of Denis Cheryshev at the moment when this article was being made and the potential arrival of Real Madrid player will most certainly add an extra quality to the squad.

Beto and Kakuta are still unavailable for the home side, as well as Marco Andreolli. Diego Figueiras has picked up an injury in January and will be added to the injury list, while the scorer against Levante Vicente Iborra is suspended for the occasion.

Keep the momentum going

Celta Vigo have eliminated Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey last four with an action-packed 3-2 win in Madrid, which saw O Celticos record a morale-boosting result following a goalless draw in the first leg. Pablo Hernandez scored a brace as Celta inflicted only the first defeat to Atletico in their last 24 games. Their Copa del Rey success was sandwiched in between back-to-back defeats though, and Eduardo Berizzo’s troops have been less than impressive away at Rayo Vallecano (3-0) and Las Palmas (2-1), respectively. Their latest loss to Las Palmas left Celta Vigo in seventh place in the standings with 34 points, to short of their Thursday rivals, who will be paying a visit to the club from Vigo on Sunday, when these two rivals will meet again for their La Liga clash. Eduardo Berizzo will breathe the sigh of relief when the January transfer market closes as his team will have been successfully kept their star performer Nolito. The Celta Vigo bright spark has been in the centre of the transfer speculation for weeks now as he was tipped to make a return to his former club Barcelona, but Josep Maria Bartomeu denied the speculation stating that the Catalan club will not be making a move for the Spaniard in the winter market.

Nolito has picked up a hamstring injury in December and will be forced to sit out though yet another match for his side, while the latest recruit from Hamburg Marcelo Diaz and Andreu Fontas will be joining him in the treatment room.

Quick Facts

  • Sevilla have lost only one of their last 17 outings in all competitions
  • Celta Vigo have lost three of their last five games on the road
  • Emeri’s men have lost only two La Liga home matches this term
  • Kevin Gameiro has scored 12 goals this season, almost half of Sevilla’s goals
  • Celta Vigo have conceded 35 goals in 22 games, most of all top seven teams

Sevilla vs Celta Vigo betting tip

The hosts are currently enjoying a fantastic run of results across competitions and their home form has been particularly impressive. Visitors make their trip to Roman Sanchez Pizjuan without their best player Nolito and will have to endure a tough challenge against in form Sevilla.
