Manchester United vs PSV Eindhoven prediction
Round five of Group B is about to begin, with all of the teams having a chance to progress to the knockout stage. Current group leaders Manchester United have a chance to secure the pole position with a win, but PSV, being only one point behind, will look for their chances to leapfrog their more illustrious opponents.
In the end, only the results count
Although it seems that the Red Devils are having a remarkable season, being first in Champions League Group Stage, and trailing only one point behind Leicester City in the Premier League standings, their actual performances have been far from impressive. Louis Van Gaal is facing a lot of criticism for his style of play and lack of attacking flair, but his main focus has always been the end result. Even though Manchester United struggle in attack, having scored only 19 Premier League goals and just 5 in Champions League Group Stage, their tough defensive line is what keeps them in the game. Nevertheless, a dramatic win over Watford on Saturday afternoon (2-1) boosted the team spirit, with the triumphant return of Memphis Depay to the starting lineup, who will probably lead the attack against his former teammates, alongside Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.
United lost the first game of the group stage at the Philips Stadion, but later managed to score two wins on home soil (Wolfsburg, CSKA Moscow) and an away draw (CSKA Moscow). The Red Devils haven’t lost a home fixture in Europe since March 2013, with an overall record of seven wins and one draw in their last eight matches. Up until now, Van Gaal’s team have five wins and only one defeat (beaten by Ajax 2-1 in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 32, but still went through on away goals) against Dutch teams on home ground. Additionally, the Lempkes lost both of their previous matches on Old Trafford, which gives Manchester United firm grounds to believe that they will continue their home winning streak and make an important step towards finishing first in the group.
The Red Devils have serious injury problems. Valencia, Shaw, Jones and Herrera will most certainly miss this game, whereas Fellaini, Carrick and Martial are doubtfull. Louis Van Gaal still hopes that captain Wayne Rooney will be able to play.
Can Cocu outsmart his former boss two times in a row?
PSV Eindhoven are yet to taste an away victory in the Champions League this season. After losing against CSKA Moscow (2-3) and Wolfsburg (0-2) on the road, Phillip Cocu’s men are arriving to Old Trafford, hoping for a good result that would see them climb the top of the group. This hope is not without valid grounds, since the Rood-witten already managed to score a victory against the Red Devils this season (2-1) at Philips Stadion.
In Erdevise, the Philips Stadium outfit suffered only one defeat in thirteen matches, having scored 14 goals in their last four games, an impressive 34 in total this season. However, their defensive line is somewhat problematic, conceding 19 goals in Erdevise and 6 in Champions League.
The Lempkes have a negative record in England, losing nine of their previous fifteen games with only four wins. Additionally, their last away victory in this competition was against CSKA Moscow (1-0) in 2007. Bearing this in mind, one could say that the Dutch side will face a difficult task breaking down United’s defense. Since we are talking about statistics, Van Gaal has a negative record against PSV Eindhoven, losing eleven of his twenty-three games, with only six wins, so, statistically speaking, the Boeren have more chance to win this game than Van Gaal’s men.
Menno Koch is still ruled out because of injury, while Jetro Willems and Maxime Lestienne are also expected to miss this week’s game. Santiago Arias is a booking away from a ban.
Manchester United vs PSV Eindhoven betting tip
Even though both teams will be looking for a win in this match, I do not think that we will see a lot of goals, since I expect a somewhat patient play on both sides. On the other hand, I believe that Van Gaal will do everything it takes to secure the position in the knockout stage, and to improve his overall record against PSV. Therefore I would put my money on home win tonight.
Tip: Home win
