Everton vs Manchester City prediction

A place in the Capital One Cup final will be at stake when Everton and Manchester City take on each other in the two-legged tie. The Citizens aim to get their job done at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening, but the Toffees should not be written off just yet.

All eyes on Lukaku

Everton’s attacking numbers are impressive. The Toffees have been scoring goals for fun in the 2015/2016 Premier League campaign, but despite netting three goals against Stoke City in their final game in 2015, Roberto Martinez’s men suffered a 3-4 loss to Mark Hughes’ troops. Everton did well to take the lead in Sunday’s game against Tottenham, but they eventually share the spoils with the capital club. The Toffees dropped to the bottom half of the Premier League table, but it seems as if the team’s performances are better than their results. Romelu Lukaku is enjoying probably the best season of his careers and Manchester City defenders should have him at bay in Wednesday’s Capital One Cup game. It has to be noted that Everton have eliminated the likes of Barnsley, Reading, Norwich and Middlesbrough in the process so far.

Coach Roberto Martinez can’t count on the likes of Tyias Browning, Tony Hibbert and James McCarthy for the clash. Wednesday’s game comes too early for South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar, who is closing in on a return.

Citizens impressive in Capital One Cup

By outplaying the likes of Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Hull City, Manchester City set up a meeting with Everton in the Capital One Cup semi-finals. The Citizens have been impressive in the process so far, but they have not been as successful in the 2015/2016 Premier League campaign. Manuel Pellegrini’s men sit in third place in the standings after 20 rounds and they head into the Capital One Cup clash following a hard-fought win at Watford (2-1). With Everton back line struggling, Kun Aguero will fancy his chances against the Toffees in the Goodison Park game. The Argentine attacker scored the winner against Watford at the weekend and he is likely to prove a handful for the opposition defenders. It has to be noted that Man City put an end to their six-game winless run on the road thanks to the triumph over Hornets. The Citizens were knocked out of the 2014/2015 League Cup campaign followin a shocking loss to Newcastle and they are certainly eager to make amends for the unsuccessful campaign.

Vincent Kompany and Samir Nasri remain in the recovery room, while Pablo Zabaleta could make his return after overcoming his long-term injury. Fellow full-back Gael Clichy is pushing for a start as well.

Quick Facts

  • Everton are on a four-game winless run at home
  • Toffees scored 1+ goals in each of their previous six matches at Goodison Park
  • 15 goals in total were scored in Everton’s previous four fixtures
  • Manchester City are unbeaten in last five meetings with Everton
  • The Citizens scored only three goals in previous six away games

Everton vs Manchester City betting tip

Manchester City gave fans some festive cheer at the weekend and they will be looking to build on the 2-1 win over Watford when they take on Everton in Wednesday’s League Cup clash. The Toffees have been impressive in front of goal this season and, taking everything into account, there is every chance we will see a real football festival in the first leg. In their last meeting at Goodsion Park the two teams played out a 1-1 draw and I am tempted to put my money on both teams to score.

Tip: Both teams to score
