Mainz 05 vs Borussia M’Gladbach prediction

Mainz 05 will host Borussia M’Gladbach in the opening game of Bundesliga Round 19. Die Nullfünfer want to repeat the success from the reverse fixture and end the negative trend, while die Fohlen need a speedy recovery after a heavy home defeat against Dortmund.

Mainz 05 in need of a positive result

Mainz 05 are on a three-game winless run in the Bundesliga, Martin Schmidt’s men haven’t scored a single goal in the spell and it is obvious his attack need an urgent wake-up call. The team need a good result if they plan to keep their place in the middle of the table. A possible good thing for die Nullfünfer is that Borussia M’Gladbach are coming to town, since they boast a 1-2-0 record against André Schubert’s men in their last three encounters. Coface Arena outfit are performing rather well on home ground in recent matches, with two wins and a draw, and a mere one conceded goal. But, the fact of the matter is that the O-Fives will have a much bigger fish to fry on Friday night, since they will host the third most efficient team in the league, which are most certainly looking for revenge. It will be up to Yunus Malli (8) and Yoshinori Muto (7), who netted most of their goals in front of the home crowd, to secure a positive result once again at Coface Arena.

Martin Schmidt has almost his entire team at disposal. In terms of injured players, Elkin Soto is still recovering from his surgery, while Maximilian Beister is ill and could possibly miss this fixture.

Die Fohlen want a spot in the Champions League

Borussia M’Gladbach suffered a heavy loss against Dortmund in the previous round (3-1) and their main rivals for the Champions League spot are coming dangerously close. It is more than obvious that die Fohlen need a win in the forthcoming clash against Mainz 05 if they plan to keep their place in the top four. André Schubert’s side have been struggling against die Nullfünfer in recent encounters, but their current away form gives them hope they can go all the way at Coface Arena this time. The Borussia-park outfit have been very efficient on their travels lately, if we disregard their slip-up against Leverkusen. The Foals netted at least three goals in four of their last five away fixtures, and are the third most efficient team in the league when playing away from home. Even though Martin Schmidt’s charges have kept things tight in the back on home ground of late, Raffael, Lars Stindl and Fabian Johnson are more than capable of producing big problems to Mainz’s defense. Twelve different players scored for Borussia this season and I am quite confident at least one of them will deliver in the upcoming fixture.

André Schubert has a rather long list of unavailable players. Patrick Herman, Nico Schulz, Andre Hahn, Alvaro Dominguez and Tony Jantschke are all in the recovery room. Thorgan Hazard is suffering from illness and will await the final verdict of the medical staff, while Granit Xhaka is returning to the team after serving his suspension.

Quick Facts

  • Mainz 05 are on a three-game undefeated run against Borussia M’Gladbach (W1 D2)
  • Die Nullfünfer score more than a goal on average on home ground this term
  • Borussia M’Gladbach netted 3+ goals in four of their previous five away fixtures
  • André Schubert’s side failed to break opposition defense just twice in their last thirteen games
  • Both teams scored in five of their last six encounters

Mainz 05 vs Borussia M’Gladbach betting tip

Mainz proved more than once they can be a very difficult opponent when playing on home turf this season. On the other hand, Andre Schubert’s side are in need of points and I trully expect a close encounter at Coface Arena on Friday night. Given the fact that both teams scored in five of their last six encounters, I would not be surprised if both teams find the net once again.

Tip: Both teams to score
